May Wrap Up

The month of May has come and gone, so what was it like for us here in Michiana? Turns out, it was fairly “normal” when it comes to temperatures.

According to data collected all month from the South Bend airport, the average temperature was 59.2 degrees. That’s 0.4 degree below the normal. The highest temperature was on May 20th & 21st. Both reached a high of 83. On the other end of the thermometer, the coldest day was the 18th a low of 34. That day also featured a lot of frost.

When it comes to rain, it was below “normal”. The airport reported 2.82 inches of rain. That’s 0.68 inches below average. Most of that rain fell during a three day stretch between the 13th and 15th. There was no snow reported, which means the snow season ended with 77.2 inches. That’s 0.7 inches above the average of 76.5.

May also ended what is called the Meteorological Spring which runs from March 1st to May 31st. The average temperature for the spring season was 49.2. That’s 0.7 above the average. It was also a wet spring, which was a big problem for area farmers this year. The South Bend airport reported 11.94 inches. That’s 1.80 inches above the average value.
