Back in the Game: Idol Auditions kick off season 9

American Idol is still fresh in our minds, so it ’s hard to believe season 9 has already begun (well, not really that hard to believe!).

This year they’re bringing the search closer to home. The windy city hosted idol auditions Monday at the United Center. Let me tell you, THAT was an experience. It was my first time covering the audition portion of the show, and I got a unique look into what people really go through.

First of all, I’m still working to get my hearing back. We walked around the United Center as they started the auditions and people were in the hallways, practicing those notes until the very last second. You can’t make up some of the obnoxious voices I heard (and yes, those people really do believe they’re great).

The actual audition process moved fairly quickly. Here’s what’s so confusing: so many people with amazing voices were turned down. Why you ask?  Well, it comes down to what makes you stand out. With so much talent, producers are looking for something and someone unique. We may never know why certain people are picked over others.

However, I will say I ran into a lot of local talent. I met a couple from Elkhart who not only had the voice, but the personality as well. One word: hot dog costume.

Overall, I enjoyed my time in Chicago. I met some of the people who are moving forward (we were not allowed to get them singing on camera). I met people who have potential. This experience is just igniting my need for more idol!

Coming up Tuesday, we will post the video of local idol hopefuls singing!
